Angelo’s Immaculate 1974 HJ Holden Monaro GTS Coupe

Today on Aussie Garage Interviews, we had the pleasure of checking out one truly special ride – Angelo’s fully restored HJ Holden Monaro GTS Coupe. This Australian classic is more than just a car; it’s a preserved piece of Holden history.

A Rare Piece of Holden Heritage

Produced on the 12th of 1974, Angelo’s HJ Monaro GTS Coupe has travelled only 91,000 kms in its lifetime and still carries all its original factory specifications. This model is rare, with only 606 built after the HQ Monaro Coupe, making it a highly sought-after piece among collectors.

Under the bonnet sits the factory 253 V8 engine, paired with an Aussie 4-speed gearbox and Salisbury diff. Aside from replacing the big nut master cylinder, fuel pump, and battery leads (all to original spec), Angelo has kept the mechanicals just as Holden intended. The exhaust remains standard, delivering what Angelo believes is the best V8 note Holden ever made.

From Long-Term Storage to Showroom Shine

The story of this Monaro starts decades ago when the first owner parked it up after an engine overheat, choosing not to rebuild the motor at the time. It sat idle for 20 years before Sam, the second owner, began a restoration. Sam repainted the Monaro in its original factory colour and made only minor changes – an electric aerial, upgraded stereo, and a gloss black engine bay instead of the original matte finish. Importantly, the factory interior was untouched, remaining in immaculate condition.

Angelo’s Long Chase Pays Off

Angelo had been eyeing this Monaro for years. After Sam sadly lost his wife, he decided to part with it, and Angelo jumped at the opportunity around 7–8 years ago. His passion for cars runs deep – he fondly remembers his HX Premier, which he owned for nearly a decade before selling.

Original Perfection Inside and Out

Step inside, and you’re greeted by a completely original, untouched interior – a true time capsule. Even the glass all around is flawless. On the road, the Monaro cruises effortlessly, turns heads with its striking paintwork, and sings with that unmistakable factory V8 soundtrack.

A Keeper for the Next Generation

This isn’t just a weekend cruiser for Angelo – it’s a family heirloom. He plans to keep the Monaro in the family for his children to enjoy in the years to come.

We at Aussie Garage are grateful to Angelo for sharing this stunning piece of Australian motoring history with us – and we can’t wait to bring you a look at his Torana SS in the future.

Thanks for showing us your ride, mate!
