Today on Aussie Garage, we’re sitting down with Chris, the proud owner of a 1971 HG Holden Premier. Chris’s journey with this car spans over 16 years, filled with countless memories, upgrades, and a touch of nostalgia. Originally, he bought this classic in Bunbury from the previous owner, and it was in true “poppy spec” with factory-standard features: a 186 Holden engine, a Tri-matic gearbox, and the original Holden differential. The body remains mostly as it was when he first bought it, though Chris suspects it might have seen a respray at some point in its history.
When Chris first picked up the HG Holden Premier, it served as his daily driver for six years, reliably getting him around for work and everyday errands. Eventually, however, he felt it was time to breathe some new life into this classic. Over time, he collected parts from marketplaces like Gumtree and various other sources, gathering everything he needed for a restoration tailored to his vision.
Now, Chris finds himself at a crossroads. The practical side of him is leaning toward spending money on panel work, a fresh paint job, and rust repairs to bring the HG Holden’s exterior back to pristine condition. But the thrill-seeker in him is tempted to push the performance limits. On the table: a powerful supercharger for a 308 V8 engine, paired with a stage 2 Tri-matic gearbox and a 10-bolt diff. For now, the supercharger idea is in the lead – and we can see why!
Inside the cabin, Chris has kept much of the original charm intact. The hood lining, door trims, and other classic touches have been preserved, while he’s made a few tasteful upgrades. He’s added an HQ center console, and the bucket seats have been beautifully re-trimmed by his friend Dan, creating an interior that balances vintage authenticity with subtle customization.
Beyond the car itself, Chris has an impressive collection of memorabilia in his mancave, but one item that stands out is his Car BBQ, designed to resemble his HG Holden Premier. It’s a one-of-a-kind creation that speaks to his passion for classic cars.
Thanks to Chris for showing us his incredible HG Holden Premier and sharing its story with Aussie Garage. We can’t wait to see where he takes it next – whether it’s a polished restoration or a supercharged powerhouse!
