The Shannons Southern Coffee Cruise in Eaton, near Bunbury, WA, is a popular monthly car meet featuring classic cars, tough street machines, American muscle and custom builds.

Aussie Garage headed south to check out the latest gathering and the huge variety of vehicles on display, while the event also helped support Variety WA.

Classic Holdens, Fords and Muscle Cars

There was something for almost every motoring enthusiast.

Highlights included blown and turbocharged VS Commodores, a tough VK Commodore, classic Ford Falcons, an XC Falcon, Holden and Ford panel vans and several Mustang GTs.

We also spotted a Pontiac Trans Am, Holden HD Premier, Willys Jeep and a big-block 454-powered classic.

Some of the more unusual builds featured custom engine conversions, including supercharged V6-powered cars.

A Great Bunbury Car Meet

Shannons Southern Coffee Cruise regularly attracts enthusiasts from Bunbury, Eaton and across South West WA.

The mix of classic, modified, European, Japanese and American vehicles means there’s always something different to see.

Owned and restored by Sam, this 440 Big Block powered Charger is the result of two and a half years of dedicated home garage work, transforming what was once a rusty shell into a powerful and beautifully finished Mopar muscle machine. It’s a perfect example of what passion, patience and determination can achieve when restoring a classic American car.

From the deep black paint to the aggressive stance and rumbling V8 under the bonnet, this Charger captures everything that makes late-60s American muscle cars so special.

Rescuing a Rusty 1968 Dodge Charger

Like many classic cars that have survived for over half a century, this 1968 Charger didn’t start out in perfect condition. When Sam first got the car, it needed significant work to bring it back to life.

The restoration involved extensive rust repairs and bodywork, with large sections of the car needing attention before the final paintwork could even begin. Anyone who has tackled a classic car restoration knows that the bodywork stage is often the biggest challenge — but also the most rewarding once the car starts to take shape again.

Over the course of 2.5 years, the Charger slowly transformed from a tired project into a sleek black street machine. The final result is a car that not only looks incredible but also stays true to the classic Mopar styling that made the 1968 Charger one of the most recognisable muscle cars ever built.

Fresh Black Paint and Classic Mopar Style

Once the bodywork was completed, the Charger received a deep black paint finish that perfectly suits the aggressive lines of the second-generation Charger body.

The black paint gives the car a tough, understated look while highlighting the Charger’s iconic design features:

• Hidden headlight grille
• Long fastback roofline
• Muscular rear quarter panels
• Classic Mopar stance

Finishing off the exterior are classic Magnum wheels, which are a perfect period-correct choice for this build. Combined with the black paint and restored trim, they give the Charger that unmistakable old-school American muscle presence.

440 Big Block Power Under the Bonnet

Of course, a 1968 Dodge Charger wouldn’t be complete without serious V8 power under the bonnet.

This build is powered by a tough 440 Big Block Chrysler V8, one of the most legendary engines in Mopar performance history. Known for its massive torque and unmistakable sound, the 440 is a perfect match for a street-driven muscle car like this.

The engine setup includes:

• 440 Big Block V8
• Alloy cylinder heads
• High-rise intake manifold
• Lumpy camshaft
• Performance upgrades throughout

Backing the engine is a 727 automatic transmission, a strong and reliable gearbox that has been a staple of Mopar performance builds for decades. Power is then sent to the rear wheels through the classic 8¾ rear differential, another legendary Mopar component known for its strength and durability.

The combination delivers exactly what you’d want from a classic Charger — big torque, strong performance and that unmistakable big block rumble.

Upgraded Brakes and Restored Driveline

While keeping the car true to its classic roots, Sam also made sure the Charger was reliable and safe to drive on modern roads.

The driveline was rebuilt during the restoration process, ensuring the car performs as well as it looks. Upgraded brakes were also fitted, giving the Charger improved stopping power while still maintaining its classic muscle car character.

The result is a car that isn’t just built for show — it’s a proper street cruiser designed to be driven and enjoyed.

Classic Mopar Interior with Old-School Charm

Step inside the Charger and the classic Mopar atmosphere continues.

The interior has been carefully retrimmed while maintaining the original look and feel of a late-60s muscle car. Everything from the dash layout to the seating and trim keeps the car authentic while giving it a fresh new life.

Some of the interior highlights include:

• Restored factory-style dashboard
• Fresh interior retrim
• Classic pistol-grip style shifter
• Period-correct styling throughout

The result is an interior that perfectly matches the exterior — clean, classic and unmistakably Mopar.

In this special follow-up episode of Aussie Garage, we head back to catch up with Carlo and dive deeper into his love for classic cars—this time focusing on his jaw-dropping 1955 Chevy and his epic mancave.

Carlo’s story is one many car lovers can relate to. Back in his 20s, he was the proud owner of a 1955 Chevy and an EH Holden. But like many young families, priorities shifted, and both cars were reluctantly sold to help buy his first home. Fast forward two decades, and that long-dormant car bug bit again—hard. Carlo reignited his passion by purchasing a 4-door 1955 Chev, and so began an epic nine-year rebuild that has to be seen to be believed.

A 2-Door Illusion & Hidden Engineering Brilliance

At first glance, the Chevy’s smooth lines and sleek black and silver two-tone paint job draw you in—but it’s what you don’t notice that sets this build apart.

Originally a 4-door, Carlo cleverly converted it into a 2-door using genuine coupe doors he scored in a deal. That required repositioning the pillars by 150mm—a job that was executed flawlessly, so much so that you’d think it rolled out of the factory that way.

But it doesn’t stop there.

Carlo engineered a custom front-end system that’s nothing short of genius. Wanting a flip front for easier engine access but not keen on ruining the factory gaps or cutting the guards, Carlo designed a slide-then-flip system. It allows the steel front end to slide forward first, clearing the doors, and then flip up on gas struts. Closed, it looks completely original. Open, it’s a show-stopper.

Power Meets Style

Under that custom bonnet lies a snarling supercharged 383ci engine that doesn’t just look the part—it sounds it too. Matched with a 4-link rear suspension, a beefy 9-inch diff, and massive rear tires, this Chevy means business on the street and on the show floor. Inside, it’s all comfort and class, with a modernised interior that still gives a nod to its heritage.

Carlo’s Mancave – A Tribute to a Lifelong Passion

Of course, no visit with Carlo would be complete without checking out his mancave—a personal museum of memories, achievements, and car culture. From trophy cabinets and model cars to vintage show posters, family photos, and artwork (including a piece we instantly recognised from a well-known artist), every inch tells a story.

One quirky touch? A pair of slippers mounted proudly on the wall. We won’t spoil the story behind them—you’ll need to watch the episode for that one!

From Father to Son: The EH Holden Legacy

Carlo’s love of cars kicked off early, heavily influenced by his father’s EH Holden. Naturally, when it came time for his first car, he followed in his dad’s footsteps and bought an EH of his own. Over the years, Carlo also owned a beautiful ’55 Chev – the kind of ride that stays in your memory forever.

Like many, life’s responsibilities called, and Carlo made the tough choice to part ways with his beloved vehicles to build a family home. Two decades rolled by, but the passion never faded. The itch returned, and Carlo was finally ready to get back into the garage.

First, he tracked down another ’55 Chev like the one from his youth and undertook a full rebuild – a machine with some incredible custom touches that we’ll reveal in an upcoming episode. But it didn’t stop there. Carlo wasn’t just rebuilding his collection – he was building a legacy.

He and his son set out to find an EH Holden for the next generation. They located a solid base and began a complete, hands-on restoration. Over the course of a year, the EH was transformed into a stunning custom ride, finished in a unique gold paint and sitting on classic B45 Simmons wheels. The interior was upgraded with modern seats and matching trim, and under the bonnet sits a trusty 202 straight-six mated to a Celica 5-speed transmission and Commodore diff.

This EH wasn’t just a showpiece – Carlo’s son drove it every day, cared for it, and took pride in what they built together. Now, nearly three decades on from its rebuild, the car has come out of a 10-year hibernation, and it’s back on the road. With Carlo’s grandson now in the picture, it’s easy to see how this EH tradition will continue. Good on ya, Carlo – this is what Aussie car culture is all about.

Enter the Beast: The 1956 Chev Pickup

As if the EH story wasn’t enough, Carlo’s garage has another showstopper – his 1956 Chev pickup. This thing is wild.

Under the hood is a blown 383ci Chev stroker, sporting a 6/71 supercharger and twin 4-barrel carbies. Backing it is a Turbo 400 gearbox and a Jaguar rear end, with a custom front end to modernise the handling. In Carlo’s words, “It drives like a modern car” – no small feat for a 1950s pickup.

It’s massively tubbed to fit a set of 11-inch wide wheels, giving it an aggressive, no-nonsense stance. The paint? Well, it’s a mystery – the truck was imported from the U.S. as-is, but it wears a deep, rich red with a bold flip that gleams in the sun. It’s got character, and a whole lot of grunt.

A Family Legacy Built on Mustangs

The interview begins with a heartfelt trip down memory lane, as Vince and Paul share cherished memories from their time working side-by-side in the shop. For Paul, growing up in the business wasn’t just about learning the ropes — it was about bonding with his father through their mutual love of restoring classic Mustangs. Vince’s 1966 Mustang Coupe: A Daily Driver with a Story

One of the most captivating stories from the interview is the restoration of Vince’s 1966 Ford Mustang Coupe, now his daily driver. This gem was discovered during a trip to the U.S., listed in the American Auto Trader. Without hesitation, Vince secured the car and had it shipped back to Australia.

Back home, Vince began restoring the Mustang and arranged for a right-hand drive conversion — a legal requirement in Australia at the time. The conversion was handled by a specialist located south of Margaret River, and once completed, Vince continued the restoration journey himself.

The result is nothing short of stunning. Refinished in its original Nightmist Blue, the Mustang boasts a 289 Windsor engine, 4-barrel carburetor, C4 gearbox, and the standard differential. A 2-core radiator was upgraded to a 3-core radiator for better performance, and the restoration process took a full 12 months. Paul’s engineering skills also came into play, as he fabricated custom parts that later became popular export items for the American market.

The attention to detail in Vince’s Mustang — and every project that comes through Mr. Mustang — is exceptional. Vince and Paul’s standard of workmanship has not only kept Mustangs on Aussie roads for generations but also earned them international respect.

Where It All Began

It all started in a backyard shed. Vince, along with his wife Marion, laid the foundation of American Auto Parts as a part-time gig alongside his towing business. His love for classic American cars — particularly the iconic Mustang — was sparked by a unique opportunity: in the 60s, an American military base in Exmouth brought over a wave of American cars. Vince saw their potential and began sourcing Mustangs from Exmouth, restoring them and reselling them to fellow enthusiasts in Perth.

As the Exmouth supply dried up, Vince expanded his network across Australia, eventually connecting with importers and growing the business into a Mustang powerhouse. But he didn’t stop there — along with two others, Vince began manufacturing hard-to-find parts for the legendary XW and XY Falcons, becoming a key distributor of Ford parts nationwide.

A Family Affair

Enter Paul — Vince’s son, born just a year before the business was founded. It’s safe to say the garage grease runs in his veins. As a kid, he was often more interested in what was happening in the workshop than in his homework. He vividly remembers customers showing up at all hours, giving him a front-row seat to the hustle of small business life.

After school, Paul pursued a mechanic’s apprenticeship at a Ford dealership but never strayed far from the family business. Over the years, Paul and Vince have built numerous cars together, bonding over their shared passion for Mustangs. Today, Paul plays a major role in American Auto Parts and continues to drive the business forward — with the same dedication and enthusiasm as his father.

A Living Legacy

What makes their story so special isn’t just the cars — it’s the people, the history, and the heart behind the business. 1955 Chevrolet Nomad – Rare, Blue, and Beautiful

First up, we’ve got Craig’s 1955 Chevrolet Nomad – and this isn’t just any Nomad. This wagon is rare in the States, let alone Australia. In fact, Craig reckons it’s the only ’55 Nomad in Western Australia, and we’re inclined to believe him.

Originally imported from LA back in 2008 by a friend of Craig’s, it changed hands and came into Craig’s garage in 2023. Built in the US and still running strong, it’s powered by a 350ci Chevy V8 paired with a Turbo 400 gearbox – a combo that delivers smooth cruising and plenty of grunt when you need it.

The car is finished in a mystery blue paint that absolutely pops in the sun – nobody’s sure of the exact shade, but it looks fantastic. The current wheels are on the larger side, but Craig’s got plans to swap them out for a more classic look to better match the car’s vintage lines. The chrome is immaculate, from those iconic bumpers to the trim pieces that really make the car sparkle.

Inside, the interior shows its age but remains in good condition. Everything’s there, so when it’s time for a retrim, Craig won’t be chasing parts – just refreshing what’s already a solid setup.

It’s not just Craig who loves this Nomad – his wife’s a big fan of ’55 Chevys too, so when this one came up, they didn’t hesitate. Now, it’s their go-to cruiser for events, weekend drives, and spontaneous lunch runs. According to Craig, “It’s like driving around in an armchair” – and honestly, what better way is there to see the sights?

1934 Ford Coupe – Hot Rod Vibes with Classic Soul

Next in the lineup is Craig’s 1934 Ford Coupe, an absolute gem with serious vintage attitude. Originally from Arizona, this coupe belonged to a retired marine before making its way across the Pacific. Craig picked it up in early 2023 from New South Wales and it’s been a staple in his collection ever since.

Under the bonnet is a flathead V8 paired with a 3-speed manual gearbox, delivering that raw, mechanical feel that hot rod enthusiasts crave. It’s also got a few subtle aftermarket touches, giving it a bit more personality without straying too far from its roots.

The paint might be showing its age – black with some surface cracking – but it still shines with character. Inside, the interior has been redone in a factory style, maintaining that classic vibe while freshening things up.

This coupe is mostly original Henry Ford steel, and while it wouldn’t take much to return it to full stock condition, Craig loves it just the way it is – a tasteful mix of classic lines and hot rod tweaks that’s perfect for weekend drives and car meets.
