Meeting Owners and Soaking Up the Atmosphere

One of the best parts of the Northern Steel Car Show is the community vibe. We spent time chatting with car owners, hearing their stories, and getting a closer look at the work that’s gone into these machines.

From long-term restorations to fresh builds hitting the scene for the first time, there was no shortage of interesting conversations. The atmosphere was relaxed, welcoming, and full of genuine enthusiasm for cars.

Packed with big cubic-inch stroker engines, upgraded driveline components, modern fuel injection, and carefully thought-out suspension and braking systems, these cars deliver the kind of performance that keeps the classic car scene alive in Perth, Western Australia.

Cars on the Green Albany 2026 was absolutely packed with classic Aussie muscle, rare Ford Falcons, Holden legends and custom builds from across Western Australia. In this episode of Aussie Garage TV, we make the five-hour road trip south of Perth to Albany, WA to check out one of the best classic car events in the southwest. With a massive swap meet, show and shine, and heaps of owner interviews, this event delivered non-stop automotive gold for anyone into classic cars, restorations, rare finds and proper Aussie car culture.

From the moment we rolled into the showgrounds, it was clear this wasn’t just another car meet. Rows of beautifully restored classics sat alongside survivor cars, patina builds and wild customs. The variety on display showed just how strong the classic car scene is in Western Australia, with everything from rare matching-numbers muscle cars to hand-built off-road tourers that have travelled thousands of kilometres across the country.

Rare Ford Falcons and Matching Numbers Aussie Muscle

One of the standout cars of the day was a rare XW GT Falcon showing just 43,000 original miles. With matching numbers, a 3.1 diff ratio and a fascinating backstory, this car is believed to possibly be an ex-police vehicle with unique delete options, making it an incredible piece of Australian motoring history. Seeing such a low-mileage GT Falcon in the flesh is rare enough, but hearing the owner talk through the car’s history and unique factory details made it even more special.

Alongside the XW GT was a stunning XA Hardtop running a 302 V8, turning heads with its clean presentation and classic muscle stance. We also checked out an original XK Falcon from October 1960 with just 40,000 miles on the clock, a true survivor that highlights just how well some of these early Australian Fords have been preserved. Adding to the Ford lineup was a beautifully restored 1965–66 Mustang 289, complete with hand controls, showing how classic car builds can be customised for accessibility while still keeping period-correct style.

Wild Custom Builds and Off-Road Rat Rod Tourers

One of the wildest builds at Cars on the Green Albany 2026 was a 1948 Ford F5 pickup that stopped just about everyone in their tracks. This isn’t your typical show truck – it’s a fully engineered, road-legal off-road rat rod tourer built to travel Australia. Running Ford Maverick underpinnings, a TD42 turbo diesel, coil spring suspension, dual winches, solar setup and a GQ Patrol dash, this beast has been driven around the country towing a 20-foot caravan. It’s the perfect example of Australian ingenuity, blending classic styling with hardcore touring capability and real-world usability.

Holden Legends, Panel Vans and Street Machines

The Holden lineup was just as impressive, with two genuine Sandman panel vans drawing crowds, along with a clean HK Premier, a tough LC Torana running a 355 stroker, Monaros, Kingswoods and a WB One Tonner. Modern Aussie muscle was also well represented, with XR8 utes and Boss 290-powered builds sitting alongside classic Holden and Ford street machines. Add in LandCruisers, GDS builds, Falcon utes and plenty more, and the diversity of vehicles on display made this one of the most well-rounded car shows in regional WA.

Cars on the Green isn’t just about the cars on display – the swap meet is a huge part of what makes this event special. From hard-to-find parts to nostalgic memorabilia, the swap meet is a goldmine for anyone building or restoring classic cars. We also spent time chatting with owners, hearing the stories behind their builds, the challenges they’ve faced restoring rare vehicles, and the journeys they’ve taken to keep these classics on the road. These personal stories are what really bring car culture to life and make events like this more than just a static show and shine.

Restoring old chrome bumpers doesn’t have to mean spending thousands on re-chroming. In this episode of Aussie Garage TV, Dan tackles one of the most common problems in classic car restoration – dull, oxidised, rust-stained chrome bumper bars on his Ford Cortina project. Using Masterson’s Metal Polish supplied by Desi Autox WA, we put budget-friendly DIY chrome restoration to the test in a real shed environment, with real results – no show car tricks, no fake shine, just honest hands-on restoration.

The original Ford Cortina bumper bars were in rough shape. Years of grime, surface rust, oxidation, cracking and bending had taken their toll, and the chrome had lost most of its shine. Instead of sending the bumpers away for costly re-chroming, Dan sourced a second-hand front and rear bumper from Facebook Marketplace for just $120 and set out to see whether a quality metal polish could bring tired old chrome back to life.

This is the reality of restoring classic Aussie cars. Not every build is a concours show car, and not every part needs to be perfect. For shed builds, budget restorations, daily drivers and weekend cruisers, getting your original chrome cleaned up and presentable can completely transform the look of your car without blowing the budget.

This Ford Cortina restoration is about working with what you can get your hands on. The bumpers weren’t perfect – one was cracked, another was slightly bent, and both were heavily dulled with rust staining and oxidation. We walk through the full DIY process from start to finish, including how to clean, prep, polish and refit old chrome bumper bars, brackets, mounts, trims and indicator surrounds.

You’ll see the true before and after results of using Masterson’s Metal Polish on original Ford chrome. This isn’t a magic fix – and we’re upfront about what metal polish can and can’t repair.
