The Northern Steel August Meet in Joondalup brought out an impressive mix of classic cars, Australian muscle and tough street machines.

Held at Bunnings Joondalup in Western Australia, the meet was packed with Holdens, Ford Falcons, Toranas, Monaros, panel vans, American muscle cars and custom builds.

Aussie Garage headed along to check out the action.

Holdens, Falcons and Australian Muscle

There was plenty to see for both Holden and Ford fans.

Highlights included HQ Monaros, Holden Toranas, XA–XC Falcon coupes, an XE Falcon, VH Commodore SL/E, VL Calais Turbo, EJ panel van, Holden Gemini and a wild supercharged XG Falcon.

A custom FJ Holden was another standout among the huge variety of classics and modified cars.

Knight Rider KITT Steals the Show

One of the most unusual cars of the night was an incredible Knight Rider KITT tribute car.

Based on the famous car from the Knight Rider television series, this KITT recreation featured a range of working functions that attracted plenty of attention throughout the night.

American muscle was also well represented, including a 1967 Chevrolet Camaro, Ford Mustangs and other classic V8s.

Perth’s Northern Steel Car Meet

Cars continued rolling into Northern Steel throughout the evening, making for a great night of Perth classic cars, Australian muscle cars and steel-bumper classics.

The variety is what makes these meets so enjoyable. From original classics to heavily modified street machines, there was something for almost every motoring enthusiast.

The Shannons Southern Coffee Cruise in Eaton, near Bunbury, WA, is a popular monthly car meet featuring classic cars, tough street machines, American muscle and custom builds.

Aussie Garage headed south to check out the latest gathering and the huge variety of vehicles on display, while the event also helped support Variety WA.

Classic Holdens, Fords and Muscle Cars

There was something for almost every motoring enthusiast.

Highlights included blown and turbocharged VS Commodores, a tough VK Commodore, classic Ford Falcons, an XC Falcon, Holden and Ford panel vans and several Mustang GTs.

We also spotted a Pontiac Trans Am, Holden HD Premier, Willys Jeep and a big-block 454-powered classic.

Some of the more unusual builds featured custom engine conversions, including supercharged V6-powered cars.

A Great Bunbury Car Meet

Shannons Southern Coffee Cruise regularly attracts enthusiasts from Bunbury, Eaton and across South West WA.

The mix of classic, modified, European, Japanese and American vehicles means there’s always something different to see.

From the moment we arrived, the atmosphere was pure Mustang passion. The car park and surrounding streets were packed with everything from concours-level classics to tough street-driven builds, creating a walk-through display that perfectly captured the evolution of the Ford Mustang. For Aussie Garage, it was the perfect setting to showcase the depth of Mustang culture in Australia while celebrating a business that has become a cornerstone of the local scene.

The variety on display was next level. Early K-Code Mustangs sat proudly alongside Shelby GT350s and GT500s, while rare and highly sought-after models like the Boss 302 and Mach 1 drew constant crowds. Fastbacks and convertibles showcased timeless American muscle styling, while late-model Mustangs powered by modern Coyote engines proved that the Mustang legacy is still very much alive and evolving.

What made this event stand out wasn’t just the cars — it was the people. Mustang owners travelled from all over Perth and regional WA to be part of the celebration, swapping stories, comparing builds, and appreciating the shared love of the Ford Mustang. Events like this highlight why Aussie car culture continues to thrive, with generations of enthusiasts united by horsepower, heritage, and craftsmanship.

At the heart of it all is Paul’s shop, American Auto Parts – Mr Mustang, a name synonymous with Mustangs in Western Australia. For 55 years, Mr Mustang has supported owners with parts, knowledge, and genuine passion for the brand. This customer appreciation day was a true reflection of that legacy — not just a show, but a thank-you to the community that has supported them for decades.

A Racing Bloodline: More Than Just a Famous Name

When you walk into Graeme’s workshop in Melbourne, you aren’t just looking at tools and car parts; you’re looking at a living museum of speed. Graeme is the uncle of Jamie Whincup, but his own story is one of a master technician and a fierce competitor.

In our exclusive interview, Graeme reflects on how the family’s obsession with speed began. It’s a story of “getting it done” in the shed—the classic Aussie Garage way. While Jamie was rewriting the record books at Triple Eight, Graeme was continuing a legacy of building some of the toughest, most period-correct race cars in the country.

The Era of Legends: Allan Moffat and Bob Jane

One cannot talk to Graeme Whincup without diving into the “Golden Era” of Australian motorsport. Graeme spent significant time working with the absolute titans of the track.

Working with Allan Moffat

Allan Moffat is a name that commands respect at Bathurst and beyond. Graeme’s time within the Moffat camp provided him with a unique perspective on the precision and “factory” level of detail required to win at the highest level. The lessons learned under Moffat’s roof—the focus on engineering excellence—are evident today in the way Graeme prepares his current Ford Mustang.

The Bob Jane Connection and the Chevy Monza Race Car

Perhaps one of the most exciting chapters of Graeme’s career was his involvement with Bob Jane. During the 1970s and 80s, Bob Jane was a force of nature in Australian racing, and the Chevy Monza Race Car was his ultimate weapon.

The Chevy Monza is often cited as one of the most beautiful and brutal race cars to ever turn a wheel in the Sports Sedan category. Graeme’s hands-on experience with these “Super-Sedans” cemented his reputation as a man who understood how to make big-bore V8s reliable under the extreme pressure of competition. The Monza era was a wild time in Aussie racing, and Graeme was right in the thick of it.

The Main Attraction: The 1966 Ford Mustang Fastback

The centerpiece of our visit was, of course, Graeme’s incredible Ford Mustang. Built for the Historic Touring Car (Group N) category, this isn’t just a show car; it’s a high-performance athlete designed to be driven on the limit.

The Build Specifications

During the interview, Graeme took us through the technical heart of the Mustang:

• The Engine: A period-correct but highly tuned small-block Ford V8, built to withstand the high-RPM demands of tracks like Sandown and Phillip Island.
• The Suspension: Engineered to handle the weight of the pony car while maintaining the “sideways” charm that Group N racing is famous for.
• The Heritage: The livery and the stance of the car pay homage to the Trans-Am style that dominated the 60s, a look that remains a favourite among the Aussie Garage audience.

Graeme explains that racing a vintage Mustang requires a delicate touch. “You’ve got to respect the car,” he says, “but you’ve also got to be brave enough to throw it into a corner.” It’s this blend of mechanical sympathy and racing grit that makes Graeme such a respected figure in the Melbourne car scene.

A Family Legacy Built on Mustangs

The interview begins with a heartfelt trip down memory lane, as Vince and Paul share cherished memories from their time working side-by-side in the shop. For Paul, growing up in the business wasn’t just about learning the ropes — it was about bonding with his father through their mutual love of restoring classic Mustangs. From sanding panels to prepping cars for sale, Paul was always in the garage, hands-on and learning from the best.

Over the decades, the father-son duo has celebrated numerous milestones, including major restorations and their growing reputation as one of Australia’s go-to experts for Mustang parts and rebuilds. Every achievement is well earned and deeply rooted in their passion for the brand and craftsmanship.

Vince’s 1966 Mustang Coupe: A Daily Driver with a Story

One of the most captivating stories from the interview is the restoration of Vince’s 1966 Ford Mustang Coupe, now his daily driver. This gem was discovered during a trip to the U.S., listed in the American Auto Trader. Without hesitation, Vince secured the car and had it shipped back to Australia.

Back home, Vince began restoring the Mustang and arranged for a right-hand drive conversion — a legal requirement in Australia at the time. The conversion was handled by a specialist located south of Margaret River, and once completed, Vince continued the restoration journey himself.

The result is nothing short of stunning. Refinished in its original Nightmist Blue, the Mustang boasts a 289 Windsor engine, 4-barrel carburetor, C4 gearbox, and the standard differential. A 2-core radiator was upgraded to a 3-core radiator for better performance, and the restoration process took a full 12 months. Paul’s engineering skills also came into play, as he fabricated custom parts that later became popular export items for the American market.

The attention to detail in Vince’s Mustang — and every project that comes through Mr. Mustang — is exceptional. Vince and Paul’s standard of workmanship has not only kept Mustangs on Aussie roads for generations but also earned them international respect.
