In this episode of Aussie Garage TV, Dan tackles one of the most common problems in classic car restoration – dull, oxidised, rust-stained chrome bumper bars on his Ford Cortina project. When you walk into Graeme’s workshop in Melbourne, you aren’t just looking at tools and car parts; you’re looking at a living museum of speed. Graeme is the uncle of Jamie Whincup, but his own story is one of a master technician and a fierce competitor.

The Chevy Monza is often cited as one of the most beautiful and brutal race cars to ever turn a wheel in the Sports Sedan category. The centerpiece of our visit was, of course, Graeme’s incredible Ford Mustang. Built for the Historic Touring Car (Group N) category, this isn’t just a show car; it’s a high-performance athlete designed to be driven on the limit.

During the interview, Graeme took us through the technical heart of the Mustang:

• The Engine: A period-correct but highly tuned small-block Ford V8, built to withstand the high-RPM demands of tracks like Sandown and Phillip Island.
• The Suspension: Engineered to handle the weight of the pony car while maintaining the “sideways” charm that Group N racing is famous for.

For the Turbo Cortina, Lurch is fabricating the custom pipework connecting the turbo, intercoolers, and intake manifold — ensuring maximum airflow, boost efficiency, and reliability.

Lurch’s team are also experts in integrating engine sensors and performing precision aluminium welding, crucial for the turbo system and cooling setup. Every weld, bracket, and pipe is designed to perform under serious pressure — making this Turbo Cortina a true street and track weapon.

Once the custom fabrication phase was complete, the Cortina rolled over to AJ’s Mods for the next stage of the build. AJ’s Mods will handle the rewiring of the car, the custom exhaust setup, and a few minor repairs to get everything ready for the engine install.
