The Aussie Garage crew recently caught up with Ann and Anton to check out their impressive new custom-built shed and their latest restoration project – a largely original 1979 Holden VB Commodore.

After completing their HQ One Tonner build, the pair were ready for a new challenge. Their goal is to restore the VB the old-school way, keeping as much of its original character as possible while tackling rust repairs, mechanical work and period-correct styling.

A Shed Built for Classic Cars

The new workshop is every enthusiast’s dream, featuring a huge shed extension, a brand-new 4-post hoist and plenty of room for future projects. It’s also packed with automotive memorabilia, vintage tools and family treasures that make the space truly unique.

The First Evolution: Enter the V8

John’s first major step in his build journey was to bring in more power. He decided to give his hatchback the muscle it deserved by converting it to a V8. To accomplish this, John sourced parts from an SLR5000, taking its 253 V8 engine and drivetrain and transplanting them into his Torana. This was the first evolution of his dream car, and it marked a turning point for John—he was no longer just an owner but a creator, shaping the car to reflect his unique vision.

The Full Restoration: Turning Dreams into Reality

Fast forward to 2015, when John took his Torana off the road for a complete restoration. It was time for his vision to be fully realized. He stripped the car down, allowing him to meticulously plan each step of the rebuild. When it came time to choose a color, he settled on a striking white base, accented with blackouts precisely where he wanted them. For John, the Torana’s iconic flares were a must, so he added a full body kit to give the car a bold, aggressive look, finishing it off with 14-inch Hotwire Wheels that perfectly fill the flared guards.

Under the Hood: Performance to Match the Looks

For the engine, John chose a 5.0L 304, as 308s are becoming rare, and he wanted the VN heads setup for better performance and reliability. Paired with a Supra 5-speed gearbox and a Borg Warner differential, this combination delivers the power and drivability John dreamed of. This setup not only boosts the car’s performance but also gives it a unique edge, blending classic Torana elements with modern enhancements.

The Interior: A Modern Nod to Classic Style

Inside, John aimed for a classic look with a modern touch. The interior features herringbone upholstery complemented by grey dash panels, maintaining the Torana’s original charm with refined upgrades. He kept the original radio but gave it a clever Bluetooth upgrade, combining the nostalgia of classic audio with today’s convenience. With an SS steering wheel tying it all together, the cabin of John’s Torana is immaculate, a place where classic and modern converge seamlessly.

Every inch of John’s LX Holden Torana SS Hatchback is a testament to his dedication, hard work, and passion for the project. The combination of the bold paintwork, the aggressive stance, the throaty sound of the V8, and the timeless interior styling makes this Torana a true showstopper. The HZ Kingswood wasn’t just a car to Ross—it was a companion. It became part of his daily life, accompanying him everywhere without fail. The vehicle seldom gave him any trouble, and Ross, being a hands-on car enthusiast, did all of the servicing himself. He maintained it in immaculate condition, treating it with such care that he never even allowed his children to drive it, fearing any potential damage.

Over the years, Ross owned several other Holdens, but none ever held a place in his heart like the Kingswood.

A Devastating Loss

However, Ross’ long-standing relationship with his beloved Kingswood came to a tragic end recently. While visiting his son’s house and staying the night, an unknown thief broke into his garage. Armed with a spare battery, they stole the HZ Holden, leaving Ross devastated.

The theft garnered media attention, and after five agonizing days, the police located the car in the Menzies Creek area. But the discovery came with heartbreak—the thieves had torched the interior, leaving the once-pristine Kingswood severely damaged.

Although Ross had insured the car, it was not enough to cover its true sentimental and market value. This incident serves as a sobering reminder: always check the value of your vehicle to ensure you are adequately covered.

The Heartbreak and Hope

The loss of the Kingswood has taken an emotional toll on Ross. For him, the car was more than a mode of transportation—it was the love of his life. Seeing it reduced to a charred shell broke his heart. However, there is hope on the horizon, thanks to the support of the Melbourne car community and Ross’ dedicated son, Alf.

Alf has been rallying support from local businesses and car enthusiasts to help restore the Kingswood to its former glory. A touching gesture came from the Bole family, who owned a similar HZ Holden Kingswood from the same year and in the same Atlantis Blue color. Although it had a 6-cylinder engine instead of the V8, they generously offered Alf first rights to purchase the car, which he gratefully accepted.

The Restoration Effort

Restoring a classic car, especially one as beloved as Ross’ HZ Kingswood, is no small feat. It involves sourcing hard-to-find parts like a GTS dash, rebuilding the engine, extensive labor, and much more. Thankfully, several businesses have already stepped forward to assist, but more support is needed to fully complete the project.

The goal is to have the car fully restored and running by Christmas, so Ross can once again be reunited with the vehicle that means so much to him.
