You Won’t Believe What Lurch’s Custom Fabrication Can Do

If you’re into custom car builds, then Lurch’s Custom Fabrication needs to be on your radar. In this week’s episode of Aussie Garage, we sat down with the man behind the torch — Lurch — to talk about his journey, his workshop, and of course, his killer HZ Holden Ute project.

And let’s be honest — this one’s not just about fabrication, it’s also about fun. With the peanut gallery of Happy and Olly chiming in during the interview, we’ve left in some of the bloopers to show off the lighter side of workshop life. There’s nothing like a bit of banter in the shed!

From Tradesman to Custom Car Craftsman

Lurch started his career as a turner and fitter, a solid foundation that’s clearly shaped the way he approaches his custom work. Precision, attention to detail, and problem-solving — it all comes together in the builds he takes on. Over the years, he’s applied his skills to some truly standout cars, including Happy’s award-winning one tonner and Jeremy’s 1,200hp LX Torana, which we featured in last week’s episode.

Step into his workshop and you’ll notice something straight away — it’s clean, tidy, and organised. That’s not just for show. It’s a workspace that reflects how seriously Lurch takes his craft, and it creates an environment that’s both professional and welcoming.

The HZ Holden Ute – The Ultimate R&D Test Bed

When he’s not turning out incredible customer cars, Lurch is wrenching on his own pride and joy — an HZ Holden well-body ute that’s being transformed into a full-blown Pro Tourer. This isn’t just any garage project either. It’s a rolling test bed for his ideas and innovations.

Under the bonnet sits a naturally aspirated 400ci Chevy engine, backed by a Turbo 400 transmission and 9-inch diff. It once ran nitrous, but as Lurch puts it — “there’s always something new to try.” The current setup includes a side-mounted supercharger, with work underway on the piping and intercooler layout. Expect more upgrades to come as the R&D continues.

He’s even taken fabrication to the suspension — creating his own custom upper control arms and planning the lowers next. It’s all part of dialing in the handling and feel he’s after.

Purpose-Built Interior & Functional Engineering

Inside, the Ute is all about performance with a race-ready vibe. Think alloy door trims, upgraded seats, Auto Meter dash, and harnesses to hold you tight. Under the custom tonneau cover, you’ll find a tidy setup featuring a custom fuel cell and relocated battery. The tray is still in its rough, original condition — but Lurch says that’ll be sorted once the mechanicals are finalised.

And that’s the thing with Lurch — every piece of the puzzle is carefully thought out. His builds aren’t just for show. They’re functional, well-engineered, and built to be used and enjoyed.
