Holden VH Commodore Restoration – Stroker V8 Power and Classic Looks
Phil’s Holden VH Commodore combines classic styling with serious stroker V8 performance. But behind its beautiful appearance is a restoration story full of unexpected challenges.
Aussie Garage visits NLA Spare Parts & Restorations in Melbourne, where Alf and Phil share the story behind this impressive classic Holden.
A Lifelong Passion for the Holden VH Commodore
Phil’s love for the VH Commodore began when he was just 12 years old. His family owned one, and those early memories sparked a lifelong passion.
After his first Commodore was stolen, Phil eventually found another VH and began restoring it into the car he’d always wanted.
The goal was simple: retain the original factory appearance while adding the performance of a rebuilt stroker V8.
Stroker V8 Rebuild and Unexpected Problems
Although the VH Commodore looked fantastic, several serious mechanical problems were hiding beneath the surface.
These included faulty wiring, a damaged starter ring gear and a transmission secured to the engine by just one bolt!
With help from Alf at NLA Spare Parts & Restorations, these issues were addressed as part of the mechanical rebuild.
Special attention went into maintaining the original appearance. Factory-style wiring, fuel lines, transmission lines, clips and heat shields all helped achieve a clean, authentic finish.
The Commodore also features Bilstein shock absorbers, providing improved suspension performance.
