Aussie Invader 5R Gets a Complete 3D Scan
The Aussie Invader 5R is getting a complete 3D scan as Rosco McGlashan and his team prepare the rocket-powered car for its next stage of development.
Aussie Garage went behind the scenes to see how modern 3D scanning technology is helping this incredible Australian project.
Scanning Aussie Invader 5R
Mike from Scan 2 Model travelled from Brisbane to carry out the scan using the Revopoint Trackit Optical Tracking 3D Scanner.
The entire car is being captured in detail.
This includes the body, undercarriage, suspension, wheels, steering and rocket engine.
The scanner captures millions of measurement points. These are then combined to create an accurate digital model of the car.
Turning the Scan Into a 3D Model
Once the scanning is finished, Mike can turn the data into detailed 3D CAD models.
Scan 2 Model specialises in converting 3D scan data into accurate models that can be used for engineering and design.
For the Aussie Invader team, this provides accurate measurements of the existing car.
They can then use those measurements when designing new parts.
The Next Evolution of Aussie Invader
The 3D scan will help with the next stage of the Aussie Invader 5R rocket system.
The team is working on new propellant tanks and an updated delivery system.
The numbers involved are impressive.
Fuel and oxidiser can flow at pressures of up to 900 PSI.
The rocket can also use around 2.5 tonnes of propellant in just 20 seconds.
The detailed 3D model will help the team work out exactly where the new components need to fit.
Built for Extreme Speed
Aussie Invader 5R was designed to challenge the World Land Speed Record.
Almost every part of the car has been designed specifically for extreme speed.
That includes its suspension, steering and aerodynamic systems.
The car also features self-adjusting aerodynamic canards to help manage aerodynamic forces.
Weight and balance are another major challenge.
As the rocket burns through its propellant, the weight of the car changes dramatically.
It all makes Aussie Invader 5R an incredible piece of Australian engineering.
Behind the Scenes with Aussie Garage
In our Aussie Garage episode, we take a closer look at the 3D scanning process and the Revopoint Trackit technology.
We also check out the rocket engine, suspension, steering and some of the engineering behind this amazing machine.
A huge thanks to Mike from Scan 2 Model, Revopoint, Lindsay, Rosco McGlashan and the Aussie Invader team for giving us this behind-the-scenes access.
