On this episode of Aussie Garage, we had the incredible opportunity to dive into the story of a genuine Bathurst LJ Holden Torana GTR XU-1 —a car that cemented its place in Australian motorsport history as the “V8 Killer.” These lightweight machines, powered by a potent straight-six engine, were a force to be reckoned with on the track. Their nimble handling and ample power made them the stuff of legend, capable of outpacing much larger competitors.
Pat’s XU-1 has been with her for a few years now, and it remains largely in the same condition as when she acquired it. While it’s not completely factory correct, the subtle modifications only add character without taking away from its authenticity. Importantly, it still boasts the original 202 engine, which has been tastefully upgraded with Yella Terra performance enhancements. The factory 4-speed gearbox remains intact, preserving its classic driving experience.
One of the standout aspects of Pat’s story is her meticulous research into the car’s history. She has managed to trace all of its previous owners, uncovering the life story of this remarkable vehicle. Among its adventures, the Torana was even used for drag racing back in the day. Fortunately, it escaped the fate of being heavily modified—no chopping, tubbing, or roll cages here. This XU-1 is as true to its roots as you could hope for.
When we met up with Pat, her passion for the car was evident. She knows these cars inside and out and is deeply committed to preserving her XU-1 just as it is. As we hit the road for a cruise, the Torana’s green paint and black trim combo turned heads, and its sound and handling reminded us why these cars are so revered.
This GTR XU-1 is more than just a car; it’s a piece of Aussie motoring history, lovingly cared for and proudly showcased. Spending time with Pat and her Torana was a blast, and we’re thrilled to bring her story to you.
