We had the privilege of heading out to meet Steve and his stunning HT Holden Kingswood—a car that embodies the true spirit of a sleeper. From its unassuming exterior to the powerhouse hiding under the bonnet, this Kingswood is an absolute gem on the road.
A Classic with History
Steve’s connection with this car goes back 24 years when he purchased it from its original owner—a little old lady in Harvey, a small country town south of Perth. Since then, Steve has meticulously undertaken a nut-and-bolt restoration, breathing new life into this Aussie classic while making a few well-thought-out upgrades along the way.
A Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing
At first glance, the HT Kingswood appears as a stock-standard ride, aside from its lowered stance. Finished in the classic Cashmere White paint, the car retains its original charm. It sits on HQ rims with original HT Holden hubcaps, further adding to the illusion of factory originality. The vintage sun visor and venetian blinds in the rear window complete the period-correct aesthetic.
Inside, the car maintains a clean and understated look with Twilight Blue vinyl seats featuring the Keltic-style pressed insert. The rubber floor mats have been swapped out for carpet, adding a touch of refinement. A ratchet shifter and some additional gauges are the only hints that this is no ordinary Kingswood.
Power and Performance Hidden Beneath the Hood
While the exterior may whisper nostalgia, the real magic lies under the bonnet. Originally fitted with a 186, the Kingswood now roars to life with a 383 Chev motor, delivering serious performance. This powerhouse is paired with a fully manualised Turbo 350 gearbox and a tough 9-inch diff, ensuring that all that extra grunt reaches the pavement efficiently.
To keep everything under control, Steve has fitted a Wilwood brake upgrade, while a 2.5-inch exhaust system fed by Pacemaker extractors ensures the car sounds as good as it performs. With this setup, the Kingswood delivers an unmistakable growl that instantly gives away its true nature.
A True Sleeper
Steve’s HT Holden Kingswood is the definition of a sleeper—a car that looks like a mild-mannered classic but packs a serious punch under the hood. It’s a build that pays homage to old-school petrol head culture, where unassuming cars hid massive performance upgrades.
